Vegetarian mayor strikes at Italy’s meat-eating heartland!

beans v beef
Chiara Appendino, the newly elected mayor of Turin, is determined to promote the delights of vegetarian and vegan food, despite the city being the capital of Piedmont, a region famed for its meat-based cuisine.

Presenting her new council’s five-year plan, the 32-year-old mayor from the Eurosceptic, anti-establishment Five Star Movement, said she wanted to reduce the amount of meat eaten by “Torinesi”.“The promotion of vegan and vegetarian diets is a fundamental act in safeguarding the environment, people’s health and the welfare of our animals,” the council’s plan states.

The new administration intends to teach Turin’s schoolchildren about the impact that eating meat has on the environment, from the intensive use of water to the production of greenhouse gases. “Leading medical, nutritional and political experts will help promote a culture of respect in our schools, teaching children how to eat well while protecting the earth and animal rights,” the council said.“
The fact that our choice of what to eat has an impact on the environment is not my opinion, it’s the opinion of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation,” said Stefania Giannuzzi, the council’s new environment officer, who has been a vegetarian for the past two decades.

Do all mammals, including us, have a fixed number of breaths in a lifetime?

IMG_1252All mammals appear to have a given number of breaths in a lifetime, about half a
trillion. As a rough approximation divide the breathing rate in breaths per minute into
700 for lifespan in years.View the chart of mammal lifespans & breathing rates HERE

“Better Breathing Means Better Health”
“The perfect man breathes as if he is not breathing” Lao Tzu (4th century BC)
Lao Tzu is claimed to have lived to a 150 years old. Perhaps he only breathed about
five breaths per minute
“The more you breathe the closer you are to death. The less you breathe the longer
you will live.’” Konstantin Buteyko 1923-2003.
We don’t promise great longevity when you train with the Buteyko Method but you
will have better health, more energy, sounder sleep, fewer symptoms and a calmer
life if you breathe better.
With humans, one of the major factors that cause chronic hidden hyperventilation is
stress. Stress triggers the primitive fight/flight response repeatedly eventually
causing the CO2 receptors to accept a lower level of CO2 and thereby establishing a
over-breathing pattern for life if left unchecked.

Beautiful & Healthy Children and Adults Eat Starch & Nose Breathe!

Healthy children
It is always fascinating when two pieces of a puzzle fit together; what has nose breathing and eating starch got to do with our health and beauty?
Slowly I am coming to the conclusion that everything connects with everything!
Many of you already know why nose breathing as opposed to mouth breathing leads to a beautiful well formed face and consequently a good posture and fine structural integrity. For those who still don’t know you can look up previous blog “Beautiful Children Breathe Through Their Nose” or do a simple experiment on yourself.
Let’s start with a simple fact you can check with your dentist or orthodontist; a pressure of 3 grams applied 24/7 to a tooth will cause it to move to a new location – this is how braces work.
Now begin the experiment: open your mouth and breathe through your mouth for a minute. Note mentally where your tongue is.
Now closer your mouth and breathe through your nose for a minute and once again mentally note where your tongue is now.
Unless you are a rare exception you will have discovered that your tongue rested on the lower teeth when mouth breathing but pressed up onto the roof of the mouth when nose breathing. When pressing on the roof of the mouth it is applying about 30 grams of pressure that keeps the upper jaw wide to comfortably hold all the teeth in good position, if the tongue fall to the lower jaw the upper jaw will usually narrow and the teeth will crowd and be crooked. This in turn affect the development of the whole facial features. For the detail go to TheBreathConnection
Now about the starch!
The human body is designed to eat starchy foods, all societies that get most of their nutrition from starch based vegetables are almost free from obesity and many of the diseases of modern affluent societies. Whether its rice, potatoes, wheat corn or what, they all are the great staples of the large proportion of the world’s population who enjoy good health and fine bodies. The increased proportion of animal based food and refined foods are the downfall of modern societies, giving rise to obesity, cancer, heart disease, strokes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and more. Visit TheFoodConnection for the science & detail or read “The Starch Solution” by Dr. John A. McDougall
So for you and your children: always nose breathe and enjoy the carbs (unrefined), fruit and vegetables but eat with less of the food with faces.

What’s the connection between your dinner and the health of yourself & the planet?

Globe
We have heard the saying “You are what you eat” that’s true, how else could it be, but did you realize “The planet is being changed by what you eat?”

We live in a world that is intensively connected, our individual lives impact on everyone and everything around the world. What is on your dinner plate might be contributing to pollution of the oceans, global warming, and world hunger or it just as easily could be helping solve most of these global problems.

If you are curious to discover what these these links are, visit The Food Connection . Then enjoy your dinner! Bon Appetit!

Why every child has to be happy, healthy, beautiful & a genius!

children
Every child born has the potential to be healthy, beautiful, brilliant and happy.
Sadly we have been all misled by many myths that need to be swept away with reason and research.
These thought patterns go deep into our subconscious and are not easily removed.
I speak with personal experience on this matter; trained as an osteopath with 35 years in the health promotion profession including almost 20 years managing one of the country’s first holistic health centres in, I really though I knew a little about health and its aetiology but it has taken until now for me to get away from all those prejudices that have coloured my thinking and begin to see some of the basic truths.
I hope that I can help expedite this thought shift for others with some of the work I am doing now.

Here are just a few of the myth busting statements for your consideration:

1. Every child at birth has the right genes and the right brain to become a genius, or at least to far exceed any expectations the parent may ever dream of for their child.
2. Every baby can learn to read as easily as they learn to talk.
3. Although education begins at 6 years old, learning begins at birth.
4. Our capacity to learn is highest in the first year of life and falls off year by year till 6 years of age.
5. Beautiful children all breathe through their noses and rarely mouth breathe.
6. Children that mouth breathe have crooked teeth and poor posture.
7. No child needs cows milk for good healthy bones.
8. None of us, including children, need meat for protein and iron.
9. The best teachers for young children are mothers, or fathers or anyone willing to give them the one to one attention they need during this early learning period.

If you have young children, grandchildren perhaps you could spare a few minutes to view this video by Glen Doman that deals with items 1-4 HERE
For items 5 and 6 view my blog HERE or for a full presentation by an orthodontist HERE
For items 7 and 8 go to HERE
For item 9 decide yourself!

PS It has taken me over thirty years to accept most of the ideas above – and I have been in the health care profession!

The Breath Connection

The Breath Connection
Just published “The Breath Connection” by Michael Lingard. We are all allotted about 500,000,000 breaths in our lifetime, this little book explains how to use them well and what happens when we don’t!
E-book version (immediate download) £2.75 from or a paperback version if you prefer.
Change your life, get rid of your stress, lower your blood pressure, stop your panic attacks, help your gut, raise your energy, improve your sleep, make sure your children don’t get crooked teeth, fix your asthma….and more.
Read the science & physiology that backs this connection up and begin to take better care of your self.
Your doctor has usually never checked your breathing as part of a routine examination (unless you arrive complaining of a respiratory condition) despite the fact that breathing is perhaps the most important activity in our lives! Well, we can live for three weeks without food, three days without water but less than three minutes without air!
Over 75% of us in the West over-breath or hyperventilate and breath badly using our upper chest and mouth breathing instead of using the amazing breathing tube – our nose. You can check your own breathing with this book and become aware of just how much you can do to help yourself to better health.

Why you should eat your greens as Mum said!

Plant food

Plants are amazing! They do something we can’t do. Every day of their lives they perform what seems an almost nuclear energy process as routine. They combine the common gas, carbon dioxide, with water using high energetic photons to make carbohydrates, the stem, leaves & fruit of the plant!
CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER = CARBOHYDRATES PLUS ?

The huge old oak tree in the field is made almost entirely from water and the carbon dioxide exhaled by animals and people over the years. This amazing alchemy comes at a price however.
The plants use high energetic light photons in this process that result in dangerous, potentially damaging, waste particles called “free radicals” that can destroy the plant.

FREE RADICALS CAN DAMAGE YOUR DNA & ALL BODY CELLS

Fortunately for the plants they have evolved over millions of years their own protection against these harmful particles. They produce a whole range of chemicals called anti-oxidants that can mop up the free radicals and make them harmless. They produce far more than they need for their own protection. That’s how they have survived to now.

FREE RADICALS ARE NEUTRALISED BY ANTIOXIDANTS

Animals, and that includes us humans, also produce these damaging free radicals throughout their lives, it is just one of the side effects of their metabolism, body chemistry and other chemical stressors. However animals don’t produce those protective agents like the plants in any significant quantities.
When the cow or sheep eats grass or other plant food the surplus antioxidants in the plants mop up the free radicals in the animal, the plants not only provide the animal’s food for energy and growth but also provide this remarkable protection against the harmful effects of free radicals. If we eat only animal food that contains little or no antioxidants and often a fair amount of free radicals we no longer get the protection of the antioxidants and are at risk of damage to our DNA and all other cellular structures.

BY EATING PLANTS WE PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THIS SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD

This is why we should eat our greens like Mum told us!
A whole plant diet will give us that extra protection and all the nutrition we need without the risk of adding more dangerous free radicals from animal based food to our own natural load, but that’s another story! You can get more on this from “The China Study” by Colin Campbell, an excellent book to make us all think again about our eating habits.

The Great Asthma Debate

There are many questions that need answers for all those millions diagnosed with asthma.

Fact: both these respected organisations below have endorsed the breath training as an important aid to asthma management because of the high grade clinical research.

BTSLOGO

THE BRITISH THORACIC SOCIETY

GLOBAL INITIATIVE FOR ASTHMA

Question 1. What is asthma?

as strange as it may seem this is still an area of debate. In 2006 an article in the Lancet discussed this very point “A plea to abandon asthma as a disease concept” and recent research has indicated that up to 40% of those diagnosed with asthma should not be and should not be on the medication prescribed. “Asthma” seems to have become a “popular” diagnosis.

Question 2. Is current treatment working?

With over 5 million people in the UK alone diagnosed with asthma, approximately 1 in 13 adults and 1 in 8 children, the incidence is increasing. There are over 1,200 deaths from asthma each year just in the UK and up to 86% of those could be avoided according to recent research. It is unusual to find any class in any school without three or four children with asthma inhalers, thirty years ago there might have been just half a dozen in the whole school. What has caused this increase?

Question 3. Could emergency admissions to hospital be reduced?

Most emergency hospital admissions of asthma patients may be because of poor compliance  with their treatment, failure to recognise just how serious their breathing was in time to take early action, lack of out off hours help from their GP surgeries or a widespread ignorance of how to help themselves.

Question 5. Is there anything asthma sufferers can help themselves to manage the condition?

The answer to this question is a categorical “Yes!” The vast majority of asthma sufferers can be taught better management of their asthma in a matter of days using breath training, better breath monitoring and simple lifestyle changes. Not only are they on average able to safely reduce their reliever medication by up to 90% and preventer medication by up to 50% but they enjoy less wheezing, less coughing, better sleep and overall better QOL. Even more importantly the fact that they learn to monitor their asthma more efficiently and can seek additional medical attention before an emergency strikes, the risk of death could be dramatically reduced.

If there was one more point to encourage our overstrained NHS to adopt breath training for asthmatics it would be the enormous potential saving on drugs, medical consultations, hospital admissions, economic loss to the country of days off work not to mention the improved quality of life for the patients. Two GP’s did trial the Buteyko Method training for a group of their asthma patients and claimed to have saved the NHS thousands of pounds a year. The best estimates at present would suggest up to half a billion pounds a year savings that could be better spent elsewhere in the NHS. £500,000,000 savings is a small price to pay to overcome deep seated prejudices  and poor health outcomes. We would have though that NICE would take greater interest unless there are vested interests that can apply pressure? The pharmaceutical industry perhaps, who could lose a large percentage of their income from asthma drugs?

Stress & the Breath Connection

Stress-Relief

What is the main factor causing ill health? Most authorities suggest it could be as simple as stress! OK is stress good for us? Yes and no! Without any stress we might all finish up like happy cabbages! However we all know what it feels like to be overwhelmed by stress, so we can’t cope and feel out of control. Perhaps there is a happy medium between theses two extremes that keeps us on our toes but doesn’t kill us?

You can check your stress a number of ways , go to STRESS TEST and use the Luscher Colour Test , or check whether you habitually hyperventilate with the CP test HERE

Let’s look at what happens when we are stressed, injured, shocked or frightened:

The most primitive part of our brain reacts instantly with the Fight , Flight or Freeze response to protect us from imminent danger.

This response produces a vast array of physiologcal changes to prepare us for this imminent danger including:  Impaired immune response / Increased blood volume from spleen  / Release of steroid hormones / Release of stress hormone cortisol / Release of catacholamines / Increased secretion of adrenalin / Release of neuropeptides / Increased heart rate / Decreased fertility or adverse  effects on pregnancy / Increased fat deposition & cholesterol levels / Increased blood pressure / Increased histamine production / Spasm of smooth muscle around vessels / Increased sleep disturbances / Increased inflammation of digestive tract / Reduced blood flow to skin / Impaired immune response / Increased blood clotting reaction and a general increased mental alertness & tension, an increased muscular tension throughout the body preparing us to fight or flee and an increased breathing rate or hyperventilation.

Repeated stress incidents from birth to our adulthood can cause us to be in a continual state of high alertness, high vigilance and chronic hidden hyperventilation. Together these reactions can lay the foundation for or even be the prime cause of most modern diseases including: Asthma, Angina, Anxiety, Breathlessness, Cardiac problems, COPD, Eczema, Epilepsy/tics, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Gastric ulcer, Headaches, Hay fever, Irritable bowel syndrome, Hypertension, Hyperthyroidism, Migraines, Depression, Sleep apnoea and many other health problems.

Despite these well researched connections between stress and diseases most of the above diseases will be treated with drugs to suppress or ameliorate the symptoms leaving the underlying problem untouched.

The genius of Dr Buteyko was recognising that we could all retrain ourselves to relax, to breathe normally and re-establish calm in our body & mind. By improving our breathing through relaxation of our muscles and our mental tension and other lifestyle factors we can restore good health or at least reduce our total reliance on medication. Since all drugs have various adverse side effects any reduction in their use can only be beneficial for our general wellbeing.

Conclusions:

In our modern world it appears that up to 90% of us are suffering from some degree of unhealthy stress and are hyperventilating. We can all learn to correct this in a matter of a few weeks but first we need to identify the problem, learn how to correct it and then make the effort and willingness to do the necessary work! Drugs don’t need our effort, that’s why they are so appealing if not even addictive. We have become a society of passive pill poppers. Here is one way to take more responsibility for your own health.
