The Greatest Threat to Your Life & the Planet – Livestock!

1. Over consumption of meat, fish and dairy produce is the main contributor to modern diseases; heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, strokes, obesity etc.
2. To meet the escalating demand livestock farming has gone industrial, factory farming is the main source of meat.
3. The environment is being destroyed by deforestation & soil erosion (to grow crops for meat production or to graze animals), rivers and oceans are being polluted with waste from factory farms and run off from intensive agriculture .
4. Fresh water shortages already a major consequence; it takes 3,000 gallons of water to produce the meat for one hamburger, and up to a 1,000 gallons for a quart of milk, 600 gallons to produce a pound of cheese. It is estimated that 70% of all water used in western states of America is used raising animals for food.
5. Depletion of fossil fuels, production of animal foods is a major consumer of oil supplies; animal produce needs over twenty times the energy input compared with plant food to produce the same calorific output.
6. Antibiotic resistant bacteria developing as a result of excessive and routine use of antibiotics in factory farming.
7. It takes sixteen pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat, more than 70% of grain grown in the west is fed to livestock.
8. All the above is serious enough without the moral and ethical problem of treating fellow mammals and other sentient animals as mere material to be processed for our unnecessary eating pleasure.
9. Famine and malnutrition is a major killer in the world despite an abundance of food being produced since much of this is fed to livestock rather than people.
10. There is an unspoken alliance between many commercial interests to pursue profit rather than provide for a healthier world. This includes, industrialised farming, the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, the health insurance industry and indeed much of the health industry that would cease to thrive with a healthier population.

Only a progressive shift in our eating habits, from high meat, fish, poultry and dairy towards a plant based diet can reduce the deaths from chronic diseases and world famine.
Current trends show an increasing shift towards more animal food based eating habits as people become more affluent, an un-sustainable road to global disasters that our grandchildren will have to suffer.
The solution is education of school children, adults, doctors and our leaders about the above, and what is on your fork at your next meal.

Connection – Discover How You & Your Health are Connected to, well, Everything!

After over a century of reductionism in medicine we need to relearn how our health and wellbeing are connected to the functioning of our body mechanics, the food we eat, the way we breathe, our mental state, our family and community life, the environment we live in and much more. We need to restore “Wholism ” or “Holism” to our teaching and practice of medicine if we are ever to have a sustainable health service. “Connection” by Michael Lingard gives a brief insight and practical advice as to how we can start to regain a deeper understanding of health and sickness that goes beyond “Pill for Every Ill”.

Is it Asthma? – “Third of asthmatics may have been wrongly diagnosed”

KKrinhaler
What is asthma, are we diagnosing it correctly and are the drugs prescribed needed?

Doctors using observations and not proper tests, study warns.
‘Sufferers’ had allergies or heartburn
By
Sarah Knapton, Science Editor
ONE third of people with asthma have been wrongly diagnosed, or their condition is no longer active, a study has suggested.
Researchers selected more than 700 adults at random who had been diagnosed with asthma in the last five years and checked
them again
.
They found 33 per cent of people did not appear to have the condition, and nine in 10 of these were able to stop their
medication completely. Most had minor conditions such as allergies or heartburn, and 28 per cent had nothing wrong with
them at all.
“It’s impossible to say how many of these patients were originally misdiagnosed with asthma, and how many have asthma that
is no longer active,” said the lead author of the study, Prof Shawn Aaron, senior scientist and respirologist at the Ottawa
Hospital and the University of Ottawa, Canada.
“What we do know is that they were all able to stop taking medication that they didn’t need medication that is expensive and
can have side effects.”
Around one in 12 adults in Britain, some 4.3 million people, has asthma, with the study suggesting 1.4 million of them do not
have an active condition.
A similar study carried out in The Netherlands last year also suggested that more than half of children are misdiagnosed with
asthma.
The new study found that doctors oftendid not order the tests needed to confirm an asthma diagnosis and in nearly half of
cases based their diagnosis solely on the patient’s symptoms and their own observations.
In the UK, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence is drawing up new guidelines advising doctors to use more clinical
tests to back up their judgement and avoid the danger of wrongly labelling someone as asthmatic.
What is asthma? This question was posed in the Lancet (Vol. 368, No. 9537, 26/8/06) which clearly demonstrates there is no consensus to the answer.
Re-evaluation of Diagnosis in Adults With Physician-Diagnosed Asthma
January 17, 2017JAMA. 2017;317(3):269-279. doi:10.1001/jama.2016.19627
To further support this finding, research done a decade ago suggested that up to 40% of those diagnosed with asthma had been wrongly diagnosed and should not be on the medication prescribed. (Middlemore & Green Hospitals March 25th 2007)
Is it not time that a proven clinically tried and tested approach should be offered patients?
That approach involves teaching patients better breathing habits to reduce the very common condition of chronic hidden hyperventilation. One such training system that has stood the test of time is the Buteyko Method another is The Papworth Method. Both are clinically and cost effective, giving patients better control of their symptoms and better QOL as well as saving millions of pounds in medical costs worldwide.

Plant-based Nutrition Quick Start Guide

Designed to serve as a road map for patients or clients desiring to exercise greater control over their health through their dietary lifestyle, the PBN Quick Start Guide is filling the void! Many doctors in the USA & Canada are saying that this is “the best” educational resource they’ve ever encountered for their practices! Click here for PDF copy.

The study of disease, or pathology, has been the mainstay of modern medicine and we have become very skilled in identifying and naming more and more diseases, most of which could be eliminated or at least less prolific through the study and application of health promotion or ethology. The evidence is now available to show this is true. Remember the evidence that tobacco was a killer was available for decades before the medical profession accepted it, do we need to wait another fifty years before everyone is aware that diet and lifestyle are the main factors of health or disease?

Health Without Medicine!

hwm
Nothing is new in this world! The great question that we all have to address today is a life changing question:

“Is there really a pill for every ill or can we all learn how to live a healthy life with the right guidance and support?”

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease. “- Thomas A. Edison. 1847-1931

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” – Albert Einstein. 1879-1955

” Example is not the main thing in influencing others; it’s the only thing.” – Albert Schweitzer 1875-1965

” It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” – Albert Einstein 1847-1931

“The most powerful way to restore health is often to do nothing- intelligently.” – Dr. Alec Burton 1930-2016

“There is a Ministry of Health, and the Department of Health. Surely, in the long view, this should be The Ministry, and Department of Public Happiness?” – Lord Horder 1871-1955

“One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient, is in caring for the patient” Dr. Francis W Peabody 1881-1927

I am just one among the many thousands of individuals, either medically trained or general members of the public interested in enjoying a long, active and healthy life who are trying to take more responsibility for their own health and well being.

My small contribution is based on trying to distill the essence of many great minds who have studied health and its origins in the past; much of this is on my website HERE that I hope will be of value to others on this quest.
This year we have launched “The Real Health Assessment” Download a pdf leaflet HERE

The Real Health Assessment

THMBuildiong
Most health checks are focused on pathology, screening for diseases or markers for possible future health problems and little information or advice is offered the client on health promotion and possible therapies that would help them.
Our Health Assessment is primarily designed to identify areas of your lifestyle that you can change to improve your health and fitness and to reduce the chances of serious diseases in the future.
Doctors are not trained in health promotion; most of their training being devoted to pathology and medical treatment with drugs or surgery; it is this neglected area of healthcare that we focus upon.
“Health promotion” is about far more than simply the prevention of disease or sickness. It seeks to give individuals the kind of health and zest most of us only experienced when we were very young.
There is a widespread view that we should all feel less healthy as we get older but this is not necessarily true, some of my “youngest” patients are in their eighties!
So what is so different?
We check your mechanics, the Body Connection.
We check your diet, the Food Connection.
We check your breathing, the Breath Connection
We check your stress, the Mind Connection.
You then will receive practical advice in a report as to what you can do yourself to improve your health and reduce the risk of future serious diseases based on the best research information currently available.

Meat consumption raises mortality rates, analysis of more than 1. 5 million people.

A review of large-scale studies involving more than 1.5 million people found all-cause mortality is higher for those who eat meat, particularly red or processed meat, on a daily basis. Conducted by physicians from Mayo Clinic in Arizona, “Is Meat Killing Us?” was published today in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

The authors analyzed six studies that evaluated the effects of meat and vegetarian diets on mortality with a goal of giving primary care physicians evidence-based guidance about whether they should discourage patients from eating meat. Their recommendation: physicians should advise patients to limit animal products when possible and consume more plants than meat.

“This data reinforces what we have known for so long — your diet has great potential to harm or heal,” said Brookshield Laurent, DO, assistant professor of family medicine and clinical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. “This clinical-based evidence can assist physicians in counseling patients about the important role diet plays, leading to improved preventive care, a key consideration in the osteopathic philosophy of medicine.” More HERE

Confused what to eat?

confused

After years of confusion as to what is good to eat, I have at last found advice based on hard facts and sound research.

I have avoided giving any advice on diet for the thirty odd years practicing in health care because of the conflicting messages sent out by government, dieticians, nutritionists and most experts in this field.
One year, butter is good for you, then it’s don’t eat butter use margarine based on vegetable oils, then it’s back to butter. Maybe someone found a research paper proving parsnips are carcinogenic, so we’d better stop eating them….. and so on.
This all changed when I first read the book “The China Study“, here was information on diet based on over fifty years of research and the largest epidemiological study in the world, involving amongst many others 800 million Chinese!
This led me to taking the eCornell University training course on Plant Based Nutrition. I was so convinced by the accumulated evidence that I launched my website The Food Connection and recently published my small book “The Food Connection”, that gives a very brief synopsis of all this work; obtainable on my website or from Lulu.com

If you want to learn more about this revolution in dietary thinking I would highly recommend you get to the lecture by Dr. Greger, a leading researcher in this field, coming from America for a lecture tour in the UK.
His lecture is entitled, “Uprooting The UK’s Leading Causes of Death” and will be first held in London on the 28th April 2016 at The Greenwood Theatre, Kings College, London 55 Weston Street SE1 3RA. Admission by booking only.

The Trouble with our NHS and our Education System!

Bored-boy-at-school
Design for failure!
If designing an educational system that destroyed the joy for learning and kept most of us ignorant, or designing a health system that could take away the individual’s responsibility for health that led to a sick society, we couldn’t have done a better job despite all the good intentions of our government leaders!

This is not an attack on all those dedicated people working in both these professions; let me make that clear from the outset. It is the systems that they are forced to work in that create these outcomes.

I taught science for a year as a supply teacher soon after leaving university and saw at first hand the thirst for learning progressively lost as children moved up through the years. There are exceptions; those fortunate enough to go to schools that inspire and develop the thirst for learning, (largely private schools I fear) find they get to the best universities and the leading positions in society. Winston Churchill said he found his schools spent most of the time showing him what he didn’t know, but if they had asked him what he knew he would have done far better!

My experience in the field of healthcare is far more substantial. Based on over thirty years working in the natural health field of medicine, I have helped many people who wanted to take more responsibility for their own health, who wanted to be more pro-active themselves despite a system that has failed to encourage or teach this.

We have produced in the National Health Service, a population that has come to rely increasingly on the doctor, medicines and surgical intervention. Most people now, are either disinterested or dissuaded from doing anything “alternative” to help themselves to improve their own health. Those who have decided to take more responsibility for their own health have had to buy the therapy and support they felt they needed in the form of complementary and natural therapies, and have made other lifestyle changes to improve their health. They find they use their doctor and medical facilities less and less.

At the Brighton International Healthworker Conference in 2004, I was surprised though delighted to hear that the King’s Fund had been given the remit by the Government, to find ways of transforming the NHS from a Sickness Service into a Health Service – unfortunately this transformation been not been achieved in the past decade!
