The Greatest Threat to Your Life & the Planet – Livestock!


1. Over consumption of meat, fish and dairy produce is the main contributor to modern diseases; heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, strokes, obesity etc.
2. To meet the escalating demand livestock farming has gone industrial, factory farming is the main source of meat.
3. The environment is being destroyed by deforestation & soil erosion (to grow crops for meat production or to graze animals), rivers and oceans are being polluted with waste from factory farms and run off from intensive agriculture .
4. Fresh water shortages already a major consequence; it takes 3,000 gallons of water to produce the meat for one hamburger, and up to a 1,000 gallons for a quart of milk, 600 gallons to produce a pound of cheese. It is estimated that 70% of all water used in western states of America is used raising animals for food.
5. Depletion of fossil fuels, production of animal foods is a major consumer of oil supplies; animal produce needs over twenty times the energy input compared with plant food to produce the same calorific output.
6. Antibiotic resistant bacteria developing as a result of excessive and routine use of antibiotics in factory farming.
7. It takes sixteen pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat, more than 70% of grain grown in the west is fed to livestock.
8. All the above is serious enough without the moral and ethical problem of treating fellow mammals and other sentient animals as mere material to be processed for our unnecessary eating pleasure.
9. Famine and malnutrition is a major killer in the world despite an abundance of food being produced since much of this is fed to livestock rather than people.
10. There is an unspoken alliance between many commercial interests to pursue profit rather than provide for a healthier world. This includes, industrialised farming, the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, the health insurance industry and indeed much of the health industry that would cease to thrive with a healthier population.

Only a progressive shift in our eating habits, from high meat, fish, poultry and dairy towards a plant based diet can reduce the deaths from chronic diseases and world famine.
Current trends show an increasing shift towards more animal food based eating habits as people become more affluent, an un-sustainable road to global disasters that our grandchildren will have to suffer.
The solution is education of school children, adults, doctors and our leaders about the above, and what is on your fork at your next meal.

The study of disease, or pathology, has been the mainstay of modern medicine and we have become very skilled in identifying and naming more and more diseases, most of which could be eliminated or at least less prolific through the study and application of health promotion or ethology. The evidence is now available to show this is true. Cutting out a sausage a day for a long and healthy life!

It may seem a simple substitution, but exchanging just a small amount of processed red meat for plant protein reduces the risk of early death by 34 per cent. Ditching bacon and eggs could also extend life, the study suggests.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital followed more than 130,000 people for 36 years, monitoring their diet, lifestyle, illness and mortality.
For a man, they found that switching 19g of animal protein – the equivalent of a sausage or a few slices of bacon – for nuts, vegetables or wholegrains significantly cut the risk of early death. A woman needs to exchange just 15g for the same effect. Substituting eggs for plant protein also led to a 19 per cent reduction in the risk of early death.
In contrast, raising the animal protein share of calories by 10 per cent led to a two per cent higher risk of death from any cause and an eight per cent greater chance of dying from a heart problem.
“Overall, our findings support the importance of the sources of dietary protein for long-term health outcomes,” said lead scientist Dr Mingyang Song, from Massachusetts General Hospital.
“While previous studies have primarily focused on the overall amount of protein intake – which is important – from a broad dietary perspective, the particular foods that people consume to get protein are equally important.

“Our findings suggest that people should consider eating more plant proteins than animal proteins, and when they do choose among sources of animal protein, fish and chicken are probably better choices.”
Animal protein foods include all types of meat, fish, eggs and dairy products such as milk and cheese. Plant sources of protein include cereals, beans, nuts, legumes, soya and bread.
The risk was more pronounced among people who were obese, had a history of smoking, drank heavily and who did little exercise.
Among the healthiest participants, the association disappeared – possibly because health-conscious people tended to eat more fish and poultry rather than red and processed meat, said the researchers.
Prof Tim Key, director of Oxford University’s Cancer Epidemiology Unit, said the findings showed th
at cutting out processed meat was crucial to good health.
“Overall, the study adds to the view that healthy diets should emphasise plant foods, including plant sources of protein, and that intakes of animal source foods – especially processed meat – should be low,” he said.
The researchers analysed data covering more than 3.5 million years of human life for the study. The findings were reported in the journal Jama Internal Medicine.

Meat consumption raises mortality rates, analysis of more than 1. 5 million people.

A review of large-scale studies involving more than 1.5 million people found all-cause mortality is higher for those who eat meat, particularly red or processed meat, on a daily basis. Conducted by physicians from Mayo Clinic in Arizona, “Is Meat Killing Us?” was published today in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

The authors analyzed six studies that evaluated the effects of meat and vegetarian diets on mortality with a goal of giving primary care physicians evidence-based guidance about whether they should discourage patients from eating meat. Their recommendation: physicians should advise patients to limit animal products when possible and consume more plants than meat.

“This data reinforces what we have known for so long — your diet has great potential to harm or heal,” said Brookshield Laurent, DO, assistant professor of family medicine and clinical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. “This clinical-based evidence can assist physicians in counseling patients about the important role diet plays, leading to improved preventive care, a key consideration in the osteopathic philosophy of medicine.” More HERE

Confused what to eat?

After years of confusion as to what is good to eat, I have at last found advice based on hard facts and sound research.

I have avoided giving any advice on diet for the thirty odd years practicing in health care because of the conflicting messages sent out by government, dieticians, nutritionists and most experts in this field.
One year, butter is good for you, then it’s don’t eat butter use margarine based on vegetable oils, then it’s back to butter. Maybe someone found a research paper proving parsnips are carcinogenic, so we’d better stop eating them….. and so on.
This all changed when I first read the book “The China Study“, here was information on diet based on over fifty years of research and the largest epidemiological study in the world, involving amongst many others 800 million Chinese!
This led me to taking the eCornell University training course on Plant Based Nutrition. I was so convinced by the accumulated evidence that I launched my website The Food Connection and recently published my small book “The Food Connection”, that gives a very brief synopsis of all this work; obtainable on my website or from Lulu.com
